Environmental enrichment for your bird

!±8± Environmental enrichment for your bird

Have you ever had time to think about how different the lives of our pet birds are like compared to the wild? A wild bird devotes up to 6 to 8 hours a day actively searching for food and feed and feeding behavior. Unfortunately, not most of our pet birds given the chance, and spend less than 1 hour of their day foraging and feeding. As responsible pet owners, it is our duty, our feathered friends with an environment that allows us to offerthese activities to keep them motivated and happy challenged.

The first rule of thumb for pet birds, the cage bigger and better. Birds in the wild, open spaces have to look into those for food, compete for space and feed. Many pet birds are expected to live happily in a small cage with only one place for two feed dishes, sea bass or two and maybe some toys, if there is space. We would be happy to live in a house the size of our room for the rest of ourLife, then why do we expect to be one of our birds? As the birds need room to spread their wings, a long flight cage is much better than a large cage close.

Traditionally, the enrichment for pet birds have been delivered in the form of inanimate objects relative, like a mirror, swing, or a ball with a bell inside. These elements are often missing opportunities for a bird to "functional" how they behave in nature and not to exercise or to stimulate their minds. Pet birds require enrichmentmuch more challenging, stimulating and motivating than a few blocks of wood or a piece of plastic on a chain.

The most effective form of enrichment that can provide for your pet birds, are ways to "feed" or actively work to find their food. With your bird, the total daily meal in one or two bowls a convenient location is just as unnatural for your loved one as the whole day left alone, or not given the opportunity to fly. These three situations are the most common precursorat the beginning of behavioral problems in pet birds.

With the wide range of new toys and foraging enrichment ideas now there is no reason why we are not able to offer our feathered friends with a stimulating environment to keep the mind active recently (and bills) on their feet.

Foraging toys and enrichment need not be expensive. Native flowers, fruits and nuts, pine cones and twigs to make enrichment toys perfect for your bird, and most can be found in your garden. What to do with rolls of paper and paperboard, of a bird's favorite places to be filled in can provide hours of fun. If you do not mind a mess from time to time some pages of an old phone book through the roof of the cage of birds and let rip. To create opportunities for feeding your bird, place several bowls in the cage and MP, the dish has meat in it every few days. They can also be treated in one of the bowls and cover the bowl with paper. These bring the birdwho work for their food and will help your mind active.
